Increasingly we are assailed with news items concerning social, economic and environmental challenges which we are all facing at present. Often the news is negative and offers little scope for engagement with the realities presented: we can easily feel impotent in the face of such enormous challenges. In many instances the only way in which these challenges can be met are through positive and collaborative approaches involving learning. Education for Sustainable Development (EfSD) is a collective and committed approach to meeting the needs and expectations of people for the immediate and foreseeable future. We intend to create the opportunity for the people of our region to make their contributions to the society of the near future. In turn, our region can and should highlight and share with others the practices which define the North East’s distinctive role in a growing global network of EfSD.
Definitions of Education for Sustainable Development are wide and varied. The best of these are manifest in the commitment of educators to practical activities that enhance social justice and promote consciousness of the wider impacts of the choices we make. RCE North East has already identified a number of initiatives, strategies and activities in education which serve to put the region at the heart of this global programme. We continue to work to identify good practice across the breadth of EfSD. RCE NE affirms the positive responses which many educators make to face the challenges of reaffirming human progress, with due consideration to responsibilities for environmental and social justice. We are inviting the participation of groups across the breadth of educational practice (from formal, semi-formal and informal organisations) who share an interest in working in partnership to create learning opportunities in the broad context of EfSD. There are already a great number of existing initiatives in this field, and through its U.N. status, RCE provides a mechanism to present these activities to a global audience.
Please supply us with information about projects and activities which you think should be included in the information RCE is presenting about the region. We would like to meet key players in your organisation with a responsibility or enthusiasm for EfSD activities. We are interested in aligning RCE with existing or proposed projects which demonstrate: a focus on Transformative Learning; partnership working across educational systems (formal, semi-formal); and elements which can be clearly presented as research.
We have a pro forma for projects applying for RCE recognition which you can download in Word format here.
